21st Birthdays...

Many of my friends are celebrating their 21st birthdays this year. I had received quite a few invitations already, but I did not go to any of them and I have no intention to go to any celebrations that may be held later this year.

Why? Because I think it's rather meaningless. As someone whose 21st birthday had long gone, I can tell you that it's really no different from other birthdays. Like Valentine's Day, society made a big fuss over the 21st birthday. It's a grand excuse to invite the whole world to gather at a place to eat and talk shit.

The only 1 celebration that made me wanna go was probably Benedict's although I did not turn up due to unforseen circumstances (I overslept). Why? Because he invited a few close friends to have a simple meal. Friends who know each other well. It's so much better than lumping all your primary school friends, secondary school friends and JC friends in a confined space and expect them to interact and have fun.

Speaking of confined space, I think the worst kind of celebration is in a chalet. Until now I still cannot understand the logic behind a chalet. Why would I wanna squeeze with X number of people (worse if you don't know them) in a room when I have a queen-size bed for myself at home? Why would I wanna spend time starting a fire and cooking food, only to find them half-cooked when I can have proper meals at home? Why? You tell me why.

Almost all my friends are celebrating their 21st year of existence this year. If I attend all of their celebrations, imagine the amount I have to spend on presents. All those for nothing received on my birthday.

Call me a punk. Say I'm miserable because I didn't celebrate my 21st birthday. Consider me committing social suicide. I just can't be bothered to be part of your sensationalised self-indulgence. Maybe, just maybe, I'll attend a few close friends' celebrations but that's the limit.
